SEX027: Omid 16B – Lilly and Poppy

Recently debuted on the much applauded SOS Ministry of Sound compilation, Omid’s new track ‘Lilly and Poppy’ is, typically, the kind of track that will never tire. For sure, the kind of track that will never grow old, or ugly. The kind of track that will never feel out of place, whether it’s heard at home, in a club, or even if it was re-imagined within a movie. In fact, in trademark 16B style, it’s teeming with cinematic qualities. Elevating. Heart-fluttering. A gripping narrative gyrates between minor and major keys, melancholy stabs and peppy, piano-driven builds. A romance that grows, organically, layer upon layer, with synth pad progressions and crunchy, punchy beats combining to strike an emotional chord. Clocking in at over 10 minutes, the dimensions are pretty grand, in all respects, as ‘Lilly and Poppy’ makes ‘Mission Possible’, because we can! The remix comes courtesy of Canadian producer Kevin Shiu. Based in Vancouver, Kevin has been at the forefront of club culture since the early ’90’s. His signature style ranges from deep tech house through driving techno and remains true to the underground sound that first inspired him: a deep, moody sound with pounding percussion and a mighty hypnotic groove. SEX026: Omid 16B – Sequential 003

The sun’s blazing down on The City. Temperatures have even been topping those in the Med. Yet Omid’s new release – ‘The Epic’ – is still giving us goosebumps. Making the hairs on our necks stand to attention. Indeed, not since Omid collaborated with Morel on ‘Escape (Driving to Heaven)’ has he committed to such a ‘hooooj’ and ambitious choon. Defining a massive new moment for SexOnWax in 2009, ‘The Epic’ is the past, present and future, combined. Honest, hands up, heads down House Music – a moment stretching out into infinity…. Just listen to the instrumental Dub Mix. This monumental wave of sound rises fiercely up out of nowhere to reveal an insane rip current of beefed up beats and bass. The synth pads surge ahead, with percussive embellishments supporting the ride. It’s an adventure of box-your-head-in proportions. And how the bottom end moves with the piano chord progressions is something else approaching a symphony. The irresistible ‘piano loops of love’ that explode between your ears after the beat drops and the bowel-rumbling bassline returns. The arrangement of this polyrhythmic mind trip positively swaggers. Cruising through eight and a half minutes with apparent ease. Alternatively, you can head for the Vocal Mix, where the song is at its most melodious, harmonious and uplifting. Here, you are welcomed onboard by growling synthesiser pads and a crushing kick drum. The journey begins… and the excitement grows. Guitar licks and a rippling bass line, recorded live by Omid, add muscle to rhythm and nurture the groove, always The Groove. The flow continues. Introducing the lilting vox of French chanteuse Anysa. Her dreamy delivery comes straight from the heart, as we always appreciate here at SOW. Needless to say, cooking in the heat of all this epic-ness are some bionic builds and rapturous hooks. All together gathering a cosmic momentum that we reckon will have us reaching for the sky, all summer long! What else to say but ‘The Epic’ is here, as large as life, ego-free and definitely built for an...

SEX025: Omid 16B – Sequential 002

February 2009, London: SexOnWax is all about propagating club music of distinction – and quality, eschewing passing trends in favour of a passion more timeless and pure. It therefore brings us indescribable pleasure to announce the latest addition to Omid’s fresh, new Sequential series. Yes, as the blizzard of the world continues, SexOnWax flies high into 2009 on the wings of Sequential 002 by Omid 16B. Sequential 002 encompasses two very different tracks: ‘Same As You’ and ‘The Move’. And these, in their various incarnations, represent the different sides of Omid’s psyche as well as the depth of his musicianship. ‘Same As You’ strikes out as an impressively fluid arrangement, where no (non-original) samples were used during production, whether it’s the synthesised lead lines, the beats or bass, which is obviously a pretty remarkable feat these days! Also essential to this Sequential is the emotive saxophone, provided by the overly able Simon Taylor, together with the 80s-style vox. Here Omid gets busy on vocal duties himself, recording layered Heaven 17-esque harmonies, alongside the mighty Loui Smith and Luke Armstrong. (This actually brings Omid full circle as he used to sing and perform in an indie band!) Of the variations available, the Dub Mix and Club Dub strip things down for utmost dancefloor impact, while the swirling Vocal Mix ensures the ‘Same As You’ message hits home.  “I came up with the idea to have a few more musicians involved in ‘Same As You’ when I had some time off touring, so I could make the electronic vibes less stagnant and more spontaneous. I had Simon Taylor from Ritz Music store in Putney, London play sax, and Loui Smith and Luke Armstrong (aka The Duke) plus myself on vocals.  “On the days of recording we jammed around with ideas and kept it natural and simple, yet moving forward with new harmonies and a better arrangement (the original version was 13 minutes long!).  “I really enjoyed the way it developed through a space of six months. Kinda sense it has an unusual ‘80s meets now’ feel to it, and even though it went through many changes it almost ended up right back to how it started.” Omid 16B   Next up, the way ‘The Move’ moves will definitely keep you guessing as to what could happen next and, since it’s packed with head-spinning surprises, it’s sure to invoke mass hysteria when heard properly on a good system. Arranged to get you deranged, ‘The Move’ challenges listeners with an exciting mash-up of changing rhythms that are held tightly in place by a funky-ass, live-sounding bassline. An epic flashback advanced by futuristic thinking, ‘The Move’ arrives in two main flavours: Live Club Dub and Live Vocal Mix, as outlined by Omid, below.  “I don’t really care how long tracks end up, as long as they flow with a bassline, but even I was taking it too far when I ended up with this 30-minute club track (‘The Move’)! I wanted to include all my favourite elements in a solid club toon and build the track like a mini DJ mix.  “There are recognisable sounds and grooves you may have heard before, but that’s not what this track is about. This track is about how we can move forward yet retain the best things from the past within house music.  “I’ve been playing the Dub for a few months and can definitely feel its less serious and more fun approach works on the dancefloor. The Vocal Mix featuring Loui Smith then adds that little spark and lift for your more serious clubbers.” Omid 16B  These two new beauties from the SexOnWax stable are due to hit the streets for Miami WMC, where you’re likely to feel them during the SOS gig in Bed, in Miami, Tuesday the 24th of March. So enjoy the trip of Sequential 002, SexOnWax’s first release of...

Omid 16B – Sequential 001

SEX024. Release date: December 22nd, 2008 ‘The Tone’ | ‘To Run To’ | ‘Dub the House’ SexOnWax proudly presents a new three-part series called Sequential, produced by Omid 16B. Sequential is a natural move for a globetrotting DJ living a life less ordinary and this SexOnWax ‘ménage à trois’ lays it down with three awesome new 16B productions: ‘The Tone’, ‘To Run To’ and ‘Dub the House’. First up, ‘The Tone’ wants for neither warmth nor funk with its insatiable beats and portly XXL b-line. Here housey hi-hats and intimate atmospherics are locked down for an uplifting sequence that draws you deep into the heart of ‘The Tone’, where it’s all about those rolling rhythms and an ever-growing groove. Next, ‘To Run To’ is a testament to Omid’s flair for giving all production elements space to breathe, build and breakdown. A whirling dervish of a bassline is savaged by fierce banks of synths, elevated by haunting minor melodies and then driven wild by stacks of percussion to create a massively powerful wall of sound. Finally, the throbbing, nu-swing, freebass arrangement of ‘Dub the House’ sounds uniquely like the 6400 Crew on Yoshitoshi, on ketamin-n-n-n, chasing Giorgio Moroder to meet the Belleville Three in the 21st century, in an elevator, with 16B. Heavy! Phwar, what a package, if we may say so ourselves! Sequential 001 follows on from brother Navid’s EP, part two of Omid’s album, and is SexOnWax’s third release of twenty zero eight – just in time for the party season! Sasha: Really loving “The Tone” am playing it out! Desyn Masiello: To Run To was a highlight at our recent gig at Moonpark Buenos Aires, rocking 5000 people with its dark and sexy growl…. and “The Tone” has been caned so much on our recent SOS tour it has become more or less the SOS theme tune! Sharam from Deep Dish: Old skool style… loving it! Behrouz: Already playing them over the weekend and loving it, teaching them all about the Groove Baby Yeah!! Lars from Funkdvoid: Wow all three of these are fantastic! Great release for Sexonwax….thanks! L Ed2000 (Berlin): This is outstanding. I love the early days of house and acid feeling in there. But it doesn’t sound retro at all! Deep sexy and evocative. Really cool (as an old deep house head 87 to 91 or so). Full support 8/10 radio club and lounge, also charting in the top 5 (dcc German dance charts for example ). Big thanks! Proton Radio (USA) – Danny Graham: “To Run To” was on my Proton Radio show on Tuesday. Crackin stuff! Anthony Pappa played the other 2 on his Proton show I...

Balance 013 // mixed by SOS

TOO many mix CDs these days miss that special, certain edge – or the point entirely – when it comes to creating a magical blend that will be called back to your stereo year on year. That said, there’s one series that maintains a faultless record time and again – ‘Balance’. With each one a labour of love from truly dedicated DJs, the ‘Balance’ CDs ooze credibility, quality and new sounds and the latest three-CD epic from the troublesome SOS boys – Demi, Omid 16B and Desyn Masiello – has already staked a firm case for mix album of the year thus far, sitting comfortably alongside Lee Burridge’s 2007 ‘Balance’ effort as a genuine future...
